The program is located in the Geisinger Northeast service area. Geisinger, serving more than three million people in central and northeastern Pennsylvania, has been nationally recognized for innovative practices in quality, delivery models such as ProvenCare® and use of an award-winning electronic medical record, EPIC®. The physician-led system is composed of approximately 30,000 employees, including nearly 1,600 employed physicians, 12 hospital campuses, 2 research centers and a 510,000-member health plan, all of which leverage an estimated $8.9 billion positive impact on the Pennsylvania economy.
Vision and goal
The vision and goal of Geisinger Northeast Internal Medicine (IM) Residency is to educate and train competent and compassionate physicians and demonstrate the reward achieved by longitudinal patient-physician relationship in a primary care setting; to create a curriculum that not only prepares learners to be efficient managers and providers of high value medicine but inspires them to be critical thinkers and visionary leaders of tomorrow’s healthcare.
Our program maintains a primary care focus and robust exposure to a comprehensive ambulatory experience throughout training, while keeping the strength of the inpatient experience intact. Although the central hub for the residency program is located at Geisinger Wyoming Valley Medical Center (GWV) in Wilkes-Barre, the educational experience is strengthened by inpatient rotations at Geisinger Community Medical Center (GCMC) in Scranton. The true strength of the program is our relationship with regional and community partners who will provide residents with a balanced and diverse outpatient clinical experience in three distinct clinical environments and prepare them to flourish in a variety of clinical settings. Our community partners are:
- Geisinger outpatient internal medicine clinics in Community Medicine Service Line (CMSL)
- Scranton Primary Healthcare Center (A Federally Qualified Health Center)
- Ambulatory internal medicine clinics at Wilkes-Barre VA Medical Center
