Geisinger Commonwealth School of Medicine scholarships and awards

  • Our institutionally funded scholarships and awards are available to admitted students. 
  • Eligibility factors include academic achievement, merit, diversity, interview day scores and socio-economic background (primarily AMCAS data). A holistic awarding approach is taken, considering many factors. 
  • The Office of Admissions is responsible for choosing and notifying recipients rather than the Office of Financial Aid. 
  • Award amounts vary for each student but generally range from $10,000 – $60,000 per year.
  • Scholarships and awards are typically renewable for up to four years if making satisfactory academic progress.
  • If offered a scholarship or award, you will be provided with important “Terms & Conditions of Your Scholarship Offer.”

Annual scholarships

Angela Fricchione Cupple and Michael Cupple Annual Scholarship

Provided through an endowment at the Scranton Area Foundation and is awarded to first-year MD students who are residents of Lackawanna County and plan to pursue primary care medicine.
Appleseed Foundation Behavioral Health Scholarship

Awarded to a third- or fourth-year MD student who is in good academic standing, resides in Luzerne County and expresses an interest in applying for residency in psychiatry or family medicine with a strong desire to practice in Luzerne County post residency training.
Geisinger Commonwealth School of Medicine Alumni Scholarship

Established by the charter class of Geisinger Commonwealth. The award goes to a Geisinger Commonwealth student who exemplifies the mission of Geisinger Commonwealth School of Medicine as demonstrated by a commitment to service and a community-minded spirit.
Geisinger Commonwealth School of Medicine Student Scholarship funded by Employees 

Made possible by the contributions of the employees of Geisinger Commonwealth School of Medicine and will help fund an MD1 student based on merit and/or need. This award will go to a student representing Geisinger Commonwealth’s northeastern and north central Pennsylvania region.
Geisinger School of Nursing Scholarship

Awarded based on selection of scholarship committee.
The John J. and Nancy S. Menapace Annual Scholarship

Awarded to an incoming student enrolled in the MD program based on merit or demonstrated financial need.
Mr. Andrew and Dr. Susan Sordoni Annual Scholarship

This scholarship is given to an incoming student enrolled in the MD program based on merit or demonstrated need as defined by the Office of Financial Aid.
Northeastern Pennsylvania Health Care Foundation Scholarships

Awarded to students who plan to return to their native counties of Lackawanna, Luzerne or Wyoming to practice medicine following their education and professional training. Two new NEPA Health Care Foundation Scholars are selected from each incoming class.
Sanofi Pasteur Annual Scholarship

Awarded to an incoming MD1 student who demonstrates need, merit or both. First preference is given to a Monroe County resident with a second preference to Lackawanna, Luzerne or Northampton counties.
Sarah Wright Memorial Annual Scholarship

Awarded to a student who demonstrates need with first preference to the residents of Northeastern Pennsylvania with second preference to students from Pennsylvania.
Taylor Nursing and Rehabilitation Center Fund Scholarship

Based on need, merit, and involvement in community activities with first preference to residents of Avoca, Dupont, Duryea, Moosic, Old Forge and Taylor who indicate intent to practice in NEPA.
Hawk Family Foundation Annual Scholarship

Awarded to an incoming first-year medical student for fall 2024. This scholarship is based on merit, need or a combination of both and the student must be a legal resident of (in order of preference) Lackawanna County, Luzerne County, Pennsylvania or northeastern Pennsylvania.

Jennifer A. Sidari, MD ’13 Memorial Scholarship

Awarded to a student with an overall GPA of 3.75 or higher with financial need. Student must be a resident of Tioga, Bradford, Sullivan, Susquehanna, Wyoming, Lackawanna, Wayne, Pike, Clinton, Lycoming, Union, Montour, Columbia, Luzerne, Carbon, or Schuylkill counties.
The Dr. Gino and Mrs. Jean Cavalieri Mori Annual Scholarship

Awarded to an MD student who demonstrates need, merit or both.
Wilkes-Barre General Hospital Auxiliary Fund Scholarship through the Luzerne Foundation

Awarded to a third-year medical student in fall 2024. The student must have successfully passed their USMLE exam on the first attempt. The student must also have graduated from a high school located in Luzerne County and must have been a resident of Luzerne County at the time of graduation.
The Louis Mastro Annual Scholarship

Awarded to an incoming student based on merit, need or a combination of both. The student must express an intention to return to northeast Pennsylvania to practice primary, family or pediatric medicine, with the hope of the recipient practicing medicine in the region for a five-year minimum commitment.
Mark H. DeStefano Annual Scholarship

Awarded to an incoming MD1 student based on financial need and merit.
John and Helen Villaume Foundation Annual Scholarship

Awarded to an MD3 or MD4 Wayne County resident based on financial need, merit or both. An essay must be written of up to 500 words on what the scholarship means to them.

Endowed scholarships

Bannon Family Endowed Scholarship

Awarded to an incoming MD1 student based on the student’s financial need, merit or both. First preference is a graduate from the University of Scranton.
Benkovic Family Foundation Endowed Scholarship

Awarded to an incoming MD1 student from Pennsylvania based on the student’s financial need, merit or both.
Darrow Nursing Endowed Scholarship

Awarded to a nursing student enrolled in a minimum of 6 credits. Selected based on need, merit or both. 
Daniel Reese Price and Carolyn Warren Price Endowed Scholarship

Awarded to an MD student. First preference to residents in Lackawanna and Susquehanna counties in PA and Broome County, NY. Second preference from Pennsylvania based on the student’s financial need, merit or both.
Dean Steven J. Scheinman Endowed Scholarship

Awarded to an incoming MD student(s) who demonstrate commitment to excellence and community engagement.
Jean and Gene Stark Arlington Industries Endowed Scholarship

Awarded to an incoming MD1 student who resides within Lackawanna County and based on financial need.
Dr. Gino and Mrs. Jean Cavalieri Mori Endowed Scholarship

Awarded to an MD student who demonstrates need, merit or both.
Fidelity Deposit & Discount Bank Endowed Scholarship

Gives first preference to an incoming MD student from any of the counties identified as primary region of Geisinger with second preference to Pennsylvania residents who exhibit financial need.
Gov. and Mrs. William W. Scranton Endowed Scholarship

A merit- and/or need-based scholarship awarded to an MD student who resides within our current counties.
Intermountain Medical Group Endowed Scholarship

Awarded to an MD3 student who has expressed interest in primary care or a subspecialty that is underserved in NEPA. First preference to students from any of the counties in northeastern Pennsylvania (defined as Lackawanna, Luzerne, Monroe, Pike, Susquehanna, Wayne and Wyoming).
Michael and Louise Altier Medical Endowed Scholarship

Awarded to students enrolled in the MD program at Geisinger College of Health Sciences with initial preference given to students from Lackawanna County. This award is based on merit or demonstrated financial need.
Myer Alperin Family Medical Endowed Scholarship

Awarded to a student in the MD program selected based on merit or need.
Sheila S. Miller Memorial Endowed Scholarship

Awarded based on merit and/or financial need with first preference to an incoming MD student who is a permanent resident of Lackawanna or Luzerne counties with second preference for student(s) who are permanent residents anywhere within the currently defined Geisinger College of Health Sciences footprint. 
Strony Family Endowed Scholarship

Awarded to students with demonstrated financial need. First preference given to residents of Bradford, Pike or Lackawanna Counties.
The Donald B. and Dorothy L. Stabler Foundation Endowed Scholarship

Awarded by the scholarship committee in such numbers and amounts as the income from the scholarship fund warrants.
Sarah Wright Memorial Endowed Scholarship

Awarded according to need. First preference is to residents in the Geisinger region. Second preference is to residents of Pennsylvania. 
The Janet Townsend, MD and Henry Geisinger Endowed Scholarship

Awarded to third-year medical student(s) based on merit and/or financial need, who have expressed interest in psychiatry, pediatrics, family medicine or general internal medicine (primary care). First preference is for student(s) who are permanent residents of any of the 17 counties in the college’s northeastern and north central footprint (Bradford, Carbon, Clinton, Columbia, Lackawanna, Luzerne, Lycoming, Monroe, Montour, Pike, Schuylkill, Sullivan, Susquehanna, Tioga, Union, Wayne or Wyoming). Second preference is for student(s) who are permanent residents anywhere within the currently defined Geisinger College of Health Sciences footprint. The scholarship award may be renewed for a student's fourth year providing the scholar meets the academic requirements.
The Lynett-Haggerty Families Endowed Scholarship

Awarded based on need, at the discretion of the Office of Admissions and Financial Aid. The scholarship will be renewed annually providing the scholar meets the academic requirements.
