Clinical Informatics Fellowship
Join a recognized innovator in clinical informatics and become a leader in an emerging field that uses technology to make healthcare more efficient and effective.
About us
Since our mission is to make better health easier and more accessible to everyone in the communities we serve, it’s probably not surprising that Geisinger is a leader and innovator in the field of clinical informatics.
Our two-year clinical informatics fellowship has been accredited by the AGCME since 2015 — just two years after formal board certification and accredited clinical informatics fellowships were available anywhere.
Our program is open to all physicians who’ve completed an ACGME-accredited residency in any specialty. Our teams use informatics and data analytics to improve patient experience and health outcomes.
Our clinical informatics team is multidisciplinary, including physicians, nurses, allied health professionals, and IT specialists, all working together to:
- Rethink “the way things have always been done”
- Embed best practices across the system
- Apply cutting-edge technology when it can improve delivery, outcomes and patient experience
We are a leader in the use of advanced analytics to improve processes for the benefit of our patients. We focus on the technology our patients use to make it easier to communicate with our providers and take better charge of their health.
As a Geisinger clinical informatics fellow, you’ll gain hands-on experience across our integrated academic health system with a wide range of clinical and health information systems. Our fellows graduate with extensive experience in building real solutions.
You’ll work closely with our physician and nurse informaticians, clinicians, analysts, and leadership throughout our health system, health plan and College of Health Sciences. And you’ll have opportunities to explore vendor and entrepreneurial aspects of health IT, including Geisinger’s new role as the first health system writhing Risant Health.
Join us for a well-rounded experience that will provide you with a solid education in clinical informatics and prepare you to be an innovative thinker, ready to play a leading role in the continuing transformation of healthcare.
Program overview
The core curriculum for Geisinger's Clinical Informatics Fellowship is based on ACGME requirements. You’ll participate in didactics, rotations, projects, research, teaching, and you’ll be encouraged to attend and present at national meetings.
We’ll make sure you have a rich experience that focuses on your areas of interest within clinical informatics. By working closely with our program director and a faculty mentor, you’ll gain a broad education across clinical informatics and in-depth training in your chosen subspecialties.
Your fellowship will include:
- Face-to-face didactics sessions with faculty, supplemented with online learning
- Participation in the national clinical informatics virtual case conferences and the annual fellows’ retreat — programs created in part by our program director
- Leadership of case conferences and journal clubs
- Training at Epic’s Wisconsin headquarters, where you’ll earn physician builder certification
We encourage you to take an active role in your education and training from day one, and we’ll help you move into a leadership role during your second year.
Working on — and leading — projects is a big part of the clinical informatics fellowship. You’ll work with the program director and faculty mentors to select projects that meet the fellowship requirements and your interests. We expect you to choose projects related to your clinical specialty. But you’ll also broaden your scope of experience by joining projects in other clinical departments, at the clinical enterprise level and within our health plan.
Geisinger has an active research program, including Advanced Application Development, Biomedical and Translational Informatics, a Genomic Medicine Institute, healthcare analytics, and a high-performance medical computing core. You’ll participate in original research, present your work at local and national meetings and publish in peer-reviewed informatics journals.
Our clinical informatics fellows also gain valuable teaching experience at the Geisinger College of Health Sciences, working with program leadership and our faculty to educate the next generation of physicians about this evolving field.
Worried that your clinical skills might lapse?
Don’t be concerned. Our fellows practice medicine part-time — 20% of your active time, on a flexible schedule. The program director will coordinate with your clinical department to ensure your practice is meaningful but doesn’t overburden you. The fellowship is your main focus while you’re with us. Opportunities for moonlighting are also available.
