Message from the program director

Geisinger has a long history of providing cutting-edge prehospital medical care to rural central and northeastern Pennsylvania. Many leaders in EMS medicine have trained in our system over the years. I was originally drawn to Geisinger as a resident due to our program’s strong history in prehospital experience. Our fellowship provides unique opportunities for education, including providing care and medical direction with 2 large, health system-integrated EMS agencies, Geisinger Life Flight® and Geisinger Emergency Medical Services. I’m committed to making sure every fellow meets their academic and professional goals.

Program overview

Rotations include:
911/Ground EMS with Geisinger Emergency Medical Services

Geisinger Emergency Medical Services is a health system-based EMS model that provides 911 and interfacility transport services across parts of 5 counties in central and northeastern Pennsylvania. You’ll work hand-in-hand with paramedics, prehospital RNs and EMTs to care for patients in diverse, often rural, environments. It’s common in our response area to have prolonged transport times and challenges unique to our location, such as agricultural trauma. Fellow response occurs using a dedicated physician response vehicle.
EMS agencies beyond Geisinger EMS

Our team of EMS medical directors provide medical oversight for over 80 EMS agencies in central Pennsylvania, including ALS ambulance services, BLS ambulance services, Quick Response Services (licensed nontransport first responder agencies), commercial EMS agencies and an amusement park.
Air/ground critical care transport with Geisinger Life Flight

Established in 1981, Geisinger Life Flight provides both air and ground critical care transport services from 6 helicopter and 2 ground critical care bases. Geisinger Life Flight provides specialty care, transporting neonatal patients, cardiac support and ECMO patients. Each asset is equipped with whole blood, bringing the highest quality of trauma care the region. Fellows are integrated as a part of the medical crew while participating in critical care transport responses.
Mobile integrated health/community paramedicine

Geisinger MIH is a well-established community paramedicine program that is integrated with the Geisinger-at-Home program with a goal of keeping our patients “healthy at home.” The MIH Program serves Geisinger Health Plan patients over 15 counties with interventional treatments like home diuresis, hydration, antibiotics and other treatments. You’ll attend visits with Geisinger MIH paramedics throughout your fellowship.
Special operations/event medicine/tactical emergency medical services

Geisinger EMS provides medical coverage for multiple mass gatherings, including the Bloomsburg Fair, a large, multi-day county fair that includes nightly concerts and over 400,000 visitors over 8 days. Fellows will train and operate with the Geisinger EMS TEMS team, which provides support to local law enforcement agencies.
EMS education institute

The Geisinger EMS Academy provides EMS education and continuing education to EMS clinicians from Geisinger and central Pennsylvania. The Academy supports the Geisinger EMT Apprentice program that provides initial training to recruits for Geisinger EMS. We are also an NAEMT education institute that provides various NAEMT courses. Beyond experiences for our EMS clinicians, we teach emergency medical responder courses to high school students and operate an active EMS Explorer Post that exposes 14 to 18 year-old students to EMS and healthcare futures. You’ll receive experience in EMS education and will be able to teach various education and continuing education courses.
Clinical skills maintenance shifts

Fellows will work clinical shifts in emergency departments in the central and northeastern regions, from trauma centers to community experiences.
Advanced receiving facilities

Geisinger Medical Center, Danville, Pa., is a tertiary facility that includes an accredited Level I trauma center, Level II pediatric trauma center and comprehensive stroke and heart attack centers. Critical care services include adult (neuro/neurosurgical, trauma and general), pediatric and neonatal critical care units where EMS patients receive the highest level of care after their prehospital treatment.
