Pediatric orthopaedic treatment at Geisinger

Your child’s orthopaedic surgeons and specialists have advanced training and experience in treating all aspects of pediatric orthopaedic conditions, including:

Medication

Your child’s doctor may prescribe anti-inflammatory medications (also called non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs or NSAIDs) to reduce swelling and pain.
Surgical treatments

If your child needs surgery, they'll have a whole team of orthopaedic specialists providing complete care before, during and after their procedure. Depending on the injury or condition, our team can perform surgeries including:

  • Anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) reconstruction, which may be needed if your child tore their ACL. When ACL reconstruction surgery is required, your child’s surgeon will often perform an arthroscopy in their knee. This minimally invasive procedure uses a camera inserted through a small incision that helps guide the surgeon through surgery.

During surgery, the torn ligament will be removed and replaced. The surgeon will then attach the new one to your child’s bone. Once your child’s knee heals, they should begin treatment through physical therapy to help them return to their previous activity level.
  • Meniscus repairs, which are needed when your child tears the meniscus in their knee. The meniscus acts as a shock absorber, keeping the knee bones from rubbing together. When it tears, a surgeon can either remove the meniscus or repair it. During a repair, sutures will be used to help the torn meniscus heal.
  • Renaissance™ robotic technology, which allows our surgeons to safely perform spine surgery with increased accuracy. These types of surgeries offer higher precision, smaller surgical incisions and a shorter recovery so your child can go home sooner.
Orthotics

Our specialty orthotics program uses computer analysis to create custom orthotics for your child. These devices correct deformities and improve physical alignment. We also create custom casts and braces to treat a wide variety of conditions.
