Match Day
What is Match Day?
Match Day happens yearly in March. On Match Day, fourth-year medical students receive an envelope or email that contains the location of their residency training for the next several years.
The National Resident Matching Program® (NRMP®), or The Match®, is a private, nonprofit organization established in 1952 at the request of medical students. It provides an orderly and fair mechanism for matching the preferences of applicants for U.S. residency positions with the preferences of residency program directors. In addition to the annual Main Residency Match® that encompasses more than 44,000 registrants and 37,000 positions, the NRMP conducts Fellowship Matches for more than 65 subspecialties through its Specialties Matching Service® (SMS®). NRMP is governed by a board of directors that includes representatives from national medical and medical education organizations as well as medical students, resident physicians and graduate medical education program directors.
Students may also participate in early matches. Military Match is for students participating in the Armed Forces Health Professions Scholarship Program. They will either be accepted to a military residency training program or deferred to apply through the civilian match. While many of the processes are similar to the National Residency Match Program, a selection board places applicants. Those results are shared in December. The San Francisco Match Program offers the chance to complete a four-year ophthalmology residency with participating institutions. Applicants receive results in February. The American Urological Association and the Society of Academic Urologists oversee the Urology Residency Match and announce results in February.
