Match Day

What is Match Day?

Match Day happens yearly in March. Together, fourth-year medical students learn the location of their residency training for the next several years.

The National Resident Matching Program® (NRMP®), or The Match®, is a private, nonprofit organization that provides an orderly, fair mechanism for matching U.S. residency applicants with residency program directors. In addition to the annual Main Residency Match®, the NRMP conducts fellowship matches for subspecialties through its Specialties Matching Service®.

Students may also participate in early matches. Military Match, in December, is for students in the Armed Forces Health Professions Scholarship Program. They will either be accepted to a military residency or deferred to apply through the civilian match. The San Francisco Match Program offers the chance to complete a 4-year ophthalmology residency. Applicants receive results in February. The American Urological Association and the Society of Academic Urologists oversee the Urology Residency Match and announce results in February.
