Adult Reconstruction Fellowship
Learn to handle the most complex arthroplasty cases and help people live with less pain and more mobility by joining Geisinger’s Adult Reconstruction Fellowship.
About the program
Joint pain can dramatically impact a person’s quality of life. Geisinger’s Adult Reconstruction Fellowship trains highly skilled physicians who are ready to provide patients with life-changing relief and mobility.
As our adult reconstruction fellow in the northeastern Pennsylvania cities of Scranton and Wilkes-Barre, you’ll join our Geisinger Musculoskeletal Institute team of 80 physicians, including 49 surgeons representing all the subspecialties. Along with being a valued colleague from day one, you’ll have the opportunity to gain experience with:
- Revision hip and knee arthroplasty
- Treatment of periprosthetic joint infection
- Complex and high-risk primary arthroplasty
- Advanced technologies in arthroplasty such as computer navigation, patient-specific instrumentation, robotic assisted surgery and augmented reality
This fellowship will prepare surgeons for adult reconstruction careers ranging from complex tertiary care to high-volume primary arthroplasty. It is also appropriate for adult reconstruction surgeons who were unsatisfied with previous fellowships, or practicing generalists who wish to specialize in adult reconstruction.
Your fellowship team will be diverse, focused and dedicated to your success. The adult reconstruction section includes 8 fellowship-trained orthopaedic surgeons who meet in a weekly educational conference. The conference includes a comprehensive didactic lecture series and sessions focusing on quality review, interdisciplinary work with other specialties, review of complex cases, cadaver labs and journal clubs. You’ll also be involved in the education of orthopaedic residents and medical students.
As a PGY6 fellow, you should expect to spend four days a week in the operating room and one day a week in the clinic with a core faculty of six fellowship-trained surgeons who have high-volume practices. Finally, you’ll be supported to attend the American Association of Hip and Knee Surgeons meeting in the fall and an additional arthroplasty meeting in the spring.
Geisinger has a strong tradition of innovation and scholarly research, and we’ll encourage you to conduct research with the support of dedicated personnel who serve the department. But we tailor our program to our fellows’ interests and desired career paths, so you can decide how much time you want to dedicate to this aspect of your training. You can also choose whether you want a role in trauma call if you’d like to maintain your proficiency, but it isn’t required.
Geisinger’s mission is to make better health easier for everyone we serve in central and northeastern Pennsylvania. As our fellow, you’ll play a key role in that effort by meeting a growing need in the northeast for surgeons who can assess complex problems with hip and knee replacements and offer care right here, without forcing patients to drive to urban centers like New York or Philadelphia.
If this program sounds like the right match for you, we hope you’ll join us.
