Geisinger Wyoming Valley PGY1 Pharmacy Residency Purpose: To build on Doctor of Pharmacy Education and outcomes to contribute to the development of clinical pharmacists responsible for medication-related care of patients with a wide range of conditions who are eligible for board certification and who are eligible for postgraduate year two (PGY2) pharmacy residency training.  

Our goals are:

  • To provide residents with the experience and training necessary to become competent and confident health system pharmacy practitioners
  • To train practitioners who can research, analyze and effectively communicate drug information
  • To cultivate knowledgeable practitioners who provide comprehensive pharmaceutical care across the continuum

The PGY1 Pharmacy Residency at Geisinger Wyoming Valley Medical Center in Wilkes-Barre, Pa., will help you develop every aspect of yourself as a pharmacist — your clinical skills, your professional goals and your personal growth. Cencora partnership

Geisinger Wyoming Valley Medical Center is proud to be able to partner with Cencora as a clinical training site for a PGY1/PGY2 Corporate Pharmacy Administration and Leadership (CPAL). As part of the two-year program, Geisinger Wyoming Valley’s PGY1 residency program will host the CPAL resident to provide a strong clinical foundation for the second year in pharmacy supply-chain management. Residents will work side-by-side with the traditional PGY1 residents in a comprehensive clinical and administrative curriculum accredited by the American Society of Health System Pharmacists (ASHP).

Required core rotations

  • Orientation (6 weeks)

Required longitudinal rotations

  • Drug information and healthcare education (11 months; 2 days per month)
  • Major research project (11 months)
  • Pharmacy administration and medication safety (11 months; 8 hours per month distributed across 2-3 meeting days)
  • Pharmacy staffing (11 months; 2 days every other weekend and two 4-hour evening shifts per month; 1 major departmental holiday)

Traditionally each elective learning experience shall be approximately 4 weeks in length; length may be modified based on resident interest and preceptor availability except where noted.
  • Advanced cardiology (pre-requisite: cardiology)
  • Advanced emergency medicine (pre-requisite emergency medicine)
  • Ambulatory care: oncology
  • Ambulatory care: neurology
  • Antimicrobial stewardship (pre-requisite: infectious diseases)

  • Hematology/oncology (inpatient/outpatient)

  • Supply Chain Management (pre-requisite for PGY2 CPAL)

  • Medical missions timing based on trip schedule and availability (2 weeks; 1 week planning and 1 week travel and mission activities)

Department of Pharmacy

The Geisinger Wyoming Valley Department of Pharmacy has 86 employees, including 43 pharmacists. The pharmacy practice model involves integration of distribution and clinical activities at the patient care level supported by centralized distribution, support functions and management systems.

What is a PGY1 pharmacy residency program?

Geisinger’s PGY1 Pharmacy Residency trains pharmacists in the fundamentals of exemplary contemporary pharmacy practice in organized healthcare systems. The residency will provide experiences and knowledge that can give your career a significant boost. For the more seasoned pharmacist, the residency can accelerate a career move to a higher level of practice.
How is the Pharmacy Residency structured at Geisinger Wyoming Valley?

The Pharmacy Residency is a full-time, 12-month program that requires a commitment of at least 40 hours per week and is compliant with all American Society of Health-System Pharmacists (ASHP) duty hour requirements. The start date is June 16.
What are the staffing requirements?

Pharmacy residents are required to staff the inpatient pharmacy area for 16 hours every other weekend. Residents are offered a compensation day, free of duty, once a month. Evening staffing occurs twice a month. Each experience will provide four supplemental hours for skill development. Assignments are made based on your skills and the experiences you need to expand your knowledge and meet your goals for the residency.
What is the stipend, and what benefits are included?

The stipend is $58,656 per year. This is paid in two-week intervals and is taxed as salary. Other benefits include an excellent healthcare package and paid time off. You’ll also receive paid administrative leave for educational meetings (the ASHP Midyear Clinical Meeting in December and Eastern States Residents Conference in May). You’ll also have a dedicated workspace with access to a personal computer with all contemporary software.

What teaching opportunities exist?

As our pharmacy resident, you’ll have a variety of teaching opportunities and will develop a range of teaching skills. As part of the Pharmacy Department, you’ll provide educational programs for fellow healthcare professionals. These opportunities include presenting formal lectures, providing informal in-services and precepting undergraduate pharmacy students. You’ll also be required to prepare and present an Accreditation Council for Pharmacy Education (ACPE) accredited continuing education program, to prepare and present an educational poster at the ASHP Midyear Meeting, and to present a platform presentation at the Eastern States Conference for Pharmacy Residents and Preceptors. You'll have the opportunity to participate in the precepting and learning curriculum program in conjunction with Wilkes University, thereby receiving an appointment as adjunct faculty there.
What interview changes will be implemented due to the pandemic?

Due to the circumstances surrounding the pandemic, all interviews will be completed virtually. There will be no on-site interviews for the 2024–2025 recruitment season, but we hope to offer an optional campus tour to those interviewed.
