Geisinger College of Health Sciences committees

Academic Leadership Team (ALT)

The ALT serves as the major operational decision-making body of the college. The ALT is responsible for ensuring the college’s strategic initiatives align with operations, key performance indicators and measures of success. The ALT reviews, comments and provides recommendations and advice to the president on strategic and operational topics and issues facing the college. The president’s seat on Geisinger’s Executive Leadership Team allows ALT to be cognizant of system strategy and operations and how it may affect the academic enterprise (education and research). The ALT develops and facilitates collaborative decision-making through inclusive and purposeful communication while effectively allocating resources of the college.

Appointment and Promotion Committee

The Appointment and Promotion Committee provides oversight and review of the appointment and promotion process for faculty and gives advice and guidance to the dean on issues of appointment and promotion.

Committee on Equity, Inclusion and Community Engagement (CEMC)

The EICE is responsible for review, comment and provision of recommendations to guide the college’s implementation of strategies that prioritize equity, belonging, justice and community engagement.

Continuing Education (CE) Committee

The CE Committee is composed of healthcare professionals who have experience with and insight into the continuing professional development needs of the learners, providers, researchers and communities served by the Center for CE. Members of the CE Committee discuss topics relevant to continuing education needs and share perspectives in collaborate fashion to help the Center for CE achieve the goals outlined in its mission.

Executive Committee

The Executive Committee is comprised of members of the executive leadership of the college. It advises the president and considers issues of governance, quality, resource allocation, educational policies, strategic planning, changes to or addition of academic programs and other matters of importance to the college.

Faculty Senate

The Faculty Senate is a representative body that serves as the collective voice of the College faculty on academic and administrative matters. The Faculty Senate provides advice, guidance and input to the dean, oversees the election of faculty representatives for standing committees and disseminates information regarding the functions of Faculty Senate to the faculty as a whole. 

The Faculty Senate brings forth matters of significant importance to the faculty for discussion, debate and decision in an orderly and timely fashion. It reviews criteria for eligibility for admission and the qualifications of candidates for graduation and recommends their approval to the dean. The senate meets the third Thursday of each month from noon until 1 p.m., with an additional hour to 90 minutes of preparation each month.

Geisinger Commonwealth School of Medicine committees

MD Admissions Committee

The MD Admissions Committee is charged with oversight and review of the admissions process, provides advice and guidance to the vice dean, dean and president on issues of admission policy and best practices, and selects students for admission to Geisinger Commonwealth School of Medicine. 

Central Education Management Committee (Continuous Quality Improvement)

The Central Education Management Committee (CEMC) serves as the continuous quality improvement committee and oversees ongoing quality improvement processes in support of the medical education mission. This includes, but is not limited to, issues related to the Liaison Committee on Medical Education accreditation standards and elements. The purpose is to monitor and improve educational program quality and compliance with accreditation standards. As appropriate, this process will address areas of the college strategic plan that require monitoring or improvement. The committee’s work includes, but is not limited to, determining which issues and accreditation elements are monitored, how often monitoring occurs, which individuals/groups receive and review the results and the process, accountability and timeline for improving identified issues. The committee works closely with, but does not duplicate, the work or authority of the Medical Curriculum Committee.

Committee on Academic and Professional Standards

The Committee on Academic and Professional Standards (CAPS) is responsible for evaluating each student’s academic performance, academic integrity and professional and ethical behavior to make recommendations on promotion and graduation. CAPS also makes recommendations to the vice dean on remediation, academic warning, probation, suspension, dismissal and returns from leaves of absence for academic and/or professionalism issues.

Medical Curriculum Committee

The Medical Curriculum Committee (MCC) is responsible for the review, oversight and decision-making for the curriculum of the Doctor of Medicine (MD) Program. 

MCC subcommittees:

  • Foundational Education Subcommittee 
    The Foundational Education Subcommittee (FESC) provides recommendations to the MCC concerning the oversight, review, development, student assessment and implementation of the Phase 1 curriculum of the MD program. The FESC should provide monthly activity reports or recommendations on its proceedings to the MCC.
  • Clinical Education Subcommittee
    The Clinical Education Subcommittee (CES) makes recommendations to the MCC concerning the oversight, review, development, student assessment and implementation of Phase 2 and 3 of the MD program. The CES should provide monthly activity reports or recommendations on its proceedings to the MCC.
  • Assessment and Evaluation Subcommittee
    The Assessment & Evaluation Subcommittee (AESC) provides recommendations to the MCC concerning the oversight, review, development and implementation of the MD program assessment, evaluation and outcomes. The AESC should provide two activity reports to the MCC per year.

Geisinger School of Graduate Education committees

Committee on Graduate Curriculum Oversight

The Committee on Graduate Curriculum Oversight (CGCO) reviews and oversees all graduate and certificate program curricula. It advises and guides the vice president/vice dean for graduate studies and the president/dean on issues of graduate curriculum innovation, learning outcomes, policy and best practices. The CGCO concerns itself with objectives, organization and evaluation of the curriculum leading to all graduate degrees and certifications. It reviews and oversees coherent and coordinated graduate curricula in which there is logical sequencing of various segments of the curricula, coordination within and across the academic periods of study, and appropriate methods of pedagogy and evaluation to meet Geisinger School of Graduate Education’s overall educational objectives.

Committee on Graduate Ethics

The Graduate Ethics Committee (GEC) reviews alleged violations by graduate students of the Graduate Student Code of Conduct and other applicable school policies (e.g., the Policy of Alcohol and Drug Free Environment) including, but not limited to, academic dishonesty, unprofessional behavior, failure to meet ethical standards and substance abuse. The GEC’s decisions regarding appropriate actions following review of alleged violations of the Graduate Student Code of Conduct are final. Appeals on grounds outlined in the Policy on the Graduate Ethics Committee may be made to the associate dean for graduate education.

Geisinger School of Nursing committees

Committee on Academic and Professional Standards

The Committee on Academic and Professional Standards (CAPS) is responsible for evaluating each student’s academic performance, academic integrity and professional and ethical behavior to make recommendations on promotion and graduation.

Committee for Nursing Program Oversight

The Committee for Nursing Program Oversight (CNPO) reviews and oversees all school nursing program and certificate curricula. The CNPO makes recommendations on issues of nursing curriculum innovation, learning outcomes, policy and best practices. It is responsible for the objectives, organization and evaluation of the curriculum leading to all nursing degrees and certifications.  

School of Nursing Faculty Committee

The School of Nursing Faculty Committee (SONFC) reviews and makes recommendations to the APT Committee and the president on all School of Nursing faculty appointments and promotions. 

Geisinger Nursing Executive Leadership Advisory Board

The Geisinger Nursing Executive Leadership Advisory Board informs on the evolution of the nursing workforce and practice trends and aids in creating excellent and creative clinical experiences. The board also reviews and speaks to the integration of students and instructors into the care team and identifies areas for enhancement in the clinical/educational environment.

Nursing Education Management Committee 

The Nursing Education Management Committee provides direction for continuous quality improvement for the nursing program focusing on evaluation of the Accreditation Commission for Education in Nursing (ACEN) standards and Geisinger School of Nursing policies, including technical standards for students.

Nursing Community Advisory Board 

The Nursing Committee Advisory Board reviews program statistics, including end-of-program student learning outcomes (EPSLO); advises on current nursing trends; and collaborates on creating excellent and creative clinical experiences.
